Description

“The best kind of nonfiction – engaging as well as informative. Burnham shows us how even young children can make a difference in the world, and offers ideas on ways to help protect wild animals.
– Natalie Kinsey-Warnock, Children’s Book Author

Doyli to the Rescue: Saving Baby Monkeys in the Amazon is a photodocumentary book by Cathleen Burnham, the first in her series of books featuring kids around the world involved in grassroots wild-animal preservation efforts.

In this hardcover nonfiction picturebook, we meet 10-year-old Doyli, a girl who helps to rescue endangered, orphaned monkeys from the perils of native hunters and the black market. She cares for the rescued animals at her island home in the Peruvian Amazon, a family-run monkey sanctuary, where she nurtures the young creatures with a mix of love and nourishing food.

When the little monkey orphans are old enough and strong enough, she releases them back to their natural habitat: the Amazon rainforest.

Cathleen Burnham visited young Doyli and her family on a trip taken with Burnham’s own kids. Since then, Burnham has traveled the world meeting extraordinary, real children who are active in projects to save Earth’s most endangered animals. Her series of books and ongoing fundraising efforts, WAKA (World Association of Animals and Kids), work to bring to public attention the need for animal rescue programs and the special role children can play in these grassroots, locally-managed efforts.

Ms. Burnham hopes these stories about extraordinary kids doing creative, practical things to save wild animals will inspire others to get involved in protecting animals and natural habitats close to home and around the world.

“A warm, sweet, and wonderful story, with engaging photographs that capture the heart and soul of a young girl who rescues wild animals in the Amazon rainforest. Everyone—kids, parents, teachers, librarians—will love Doyli.” – Raymond Bial, award-winning author of Amish Home, Ellis Island, and Where Lincoln Walked
